Stardew Valley Fish Ponds Guide

Fish Pond guide for Roe, Aged Roe, Caviar, rare produce, population quests, Golden Animal Crackers, and best fish choices.

Quick facts

Fish Ponds are built by Robin for 5,000g, 200 Stone, 5 Seaweed, and 5 Green Algae.
Most ponds can grow to 10 fish after population quests, while Legendary Fish and Legendary Fish II ponds stay at 1.
Version 1.6 lets a Golden Animal Cracker double a fish pond's normal output until the pond is emptied.

Choosing first ponds

The strongest first pond depends on whether you need money, bundles, rare materials, or collection coverage. Sturgeon is the clean Caviar route; Lava Eel and Blobfish are slower but more exciting; Squid and Midnight Squid solve Squid Ink.

  • Use Sturgeon when Caviar or steady preserved Roe matters.
  • Use Lava Eel, Blobfish, Stingray, and Super Cucumber for rarer pond outputs.
  • Use Squid or Midnight Squid when Squid Ink blocks cooking, tailoring, or remixed bundles.

Population quests

Fish reproduce until a capacity gate blocks growth, then a quest asks for specific items. Keep likely quest materials near the ponds so the population clock can restart quickly after a request appears.

  • Rare fish often start with capacity 1 and need more gates before reaching 10.
  • Tiger Trout, Sea Urchin, and Coral behave differently from standard fish ponds.
  • Completing a quest resets the spawn clock, so immediate completion still takes time to produce the next fish.
